Celtic Slateworks is an independent workshop creating one-off slate pieces with real depth and character. Designs range from traditional Celtic detail to clean modern lettering.
The maker’s approach
Drawn, cut and finished individually.
Our family has Welsh and Scottish roots. Our British military background also shapes the character of Celtic Slateworks and the standards behind it. The precision and discipline learnt through military service now guide every commission. We believe every client should receive that level of care as standard.
Every commission starts with the person or occasion behind it. The design is developed for the chosen piece of slate. We then check its carving suitability and obtain approval before work begins.
Relief carving removes the surrounding material so the subject stands proud. V-carving cuts crisp angled channels into the slate. Both take time and control. Each also needs repeated hand finishing. Neither process uses a laser.
The result is deliberately different from surface engraving. Light moves across the carving and shadows change through the day. The maker’s hand remains visible in the finished work.

Depth is built gradually by hand. The slate is checked constantly as the work develops.

We complete the edges and highlights. Mounting and protection are prepared for the intended setting.
